FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A complete team win on Saturday as eight different players either recorded a hit, scored a run or drove in an RBI as No. 8 Florida State (9-5) came from behind to post a 5-3 win over No. 19 Baylor (16-4) in day two of the 2020 Wooo Pig Classic.
“Loved the fight out of the team today after falling behind early,” said FSU head coach Lonni Alameda. “We were more focused and executed in our offensive opportunities. Kat pitched a great game in relief and kept Baylor off balance, while our defense made some nice plays as well. Looking forward to coming back tonight to take on Arkansas.”
Baylor took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Kyla Walker led off with a single and scored on a two-run home run by Aliyah Pritchett.
The Seminoles rallied with three runs in the fourth inning as Devyn Flaherty led off with a single and scored on an RBI triple by Dani Morgan. A sacrifice fly by Elizabeth Mason later in the inning tied the game at 2-2. Morgan Noah continued the inning with a two-out single to left and scored on an RBI double by Josie Muffley.
After making plays offensively in the top of the inning, Flaherty flashed the leather in the bottom half of the fourth with an impressive play in the gap in right center, making a catch at a dead sprint to rob an extra-base hit.
Following a leadoff single in the bottom of the fifth inning for Baylor, a line drive to Sydney Sherrill at third base was caught and fired back to first for a double play, FSU’s eighth double play of the season.
Cassidy Davis opened the FSU sixth inning with an infield single and was pinch-run for by Leslie Farris. Mason hit a ground ball to third, but a Baylor error allowed everyone to be safe. A sacrifice bunt by Noah moved the runners to second and third with one out and Muffley drove in her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to left. Kaia LoPreste made it 5-2 Seminoles with an RBI double to center, her second hit of the ballgame.
Baylor hit a leadoff single to begin the bottom of the seventh inning, and a pair of groundouts moved the runner to third with two away. Maddison Kettler flared an RBI single to left to make it 5-3, before a fly out to right field ended the game.
Brianna Enter gave up two runs on three hits in a 0.2 inning start, while Kathryn Sandercock (5-1) tossed 6.1 innings of relief and allowed one run on seven hits with zero walks and two strikeouts, while retiring 16 of the first 19 batters she faced, including double plays by the Seminoles in the fifth and sixth innings.
