TALLAHASSEE, Fl. — The No. 6 Florida State soccer team (10-2-0, 4-0-0) took down Pitt (3-6-3, 0-2-2) 1-0 at home during the annual Paint-it Pink game.

“We come out against all these ACC teams and they are good teams,” said head coach Mark Krikorian. “They are well-coached and have good game plans. They did a great job of executing it and fortunately, we were able to score an early goal and we were able to control a lot of the game. We gave up a couple of chances that we should not have given up. Overall, it is three points and now we get ourselves ready for Virginia Tech.”

The Seminoles got on the board early, scoring 1:35 into the game. Kristina Lynch got fouled inside the box leading to a penalty kick. Abbey Newton stepped up and connected firing it into the right side of the net for the game’s only goal. It was Newton’s third of the season.

The Seminoles dominated the first half, taking 13 shots to Pittsburgh’s one but the Noles could only get one to fall. The Seminoles had a chance in the seventh minute after Malia Berkely got a shot deflected, leading to a Kristen McFarland shot that was saved.

In the 25th minute, Jenna Nighswonger got off another good shot for the Garnet and Gold on a free-kick but it bounced off the left post. The Noles had a few more shots to round out the first half but only had three on goal.

Nothing much was going for either team in the second half as the Noles dominated time of possession, holding onto the ball for 72 percent of the game. Pitt had their best chance of the game in the 62nd minute on a shot from Anna Rico that was saved by Caroline Jeffers. Jeffers held the Panthers off the board for the ninth shutout of her career.

The Noles came away with a 1-0 victory to improve to 4-0 in the ACC as they head on the road next Thursday to take on Virginia Tech. Florida State is back at home on Sunday, October 13 to take on No. 1 Virginia.
