DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Apr. 28) – The FAMU Softball team rallied from an 8-0 deficit to blow by rival Bethune-Cookman, 11-8 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Southern Division series finale Sunday at Sunnyland Field.
Sunday’s win gives FAMU (22-25, 13-2 MEAC) a share of the MEAC Southern Division title along with Bethune-Cookman.
The Wildcats (22-28, 13-2 MEAC) scored four runs in the first and four more in the third to take an 8-0 lead.
But FAMU came alive in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits to close to 8-6, with the big blow coming from freshman Seriah Brokenborough, who belted a grand slam home run to cap the FAMU rally.
In the fifth, Alexis Day’s ground out RBI scored Tyra Bowers to pull the Rattlers to within one run at 8-7.
Then in the top of the seventh, FAMU took the lead for good with a four-run outburst, keyed an RBI double from Alexis Day, a run scoring single by Kimaya Watkins, with two more scoring on a Wildcat error at third base.
FAMU's Kyaira Brown (15-9) won in relief, coming in the game in the second. She blanked the Wildcats over the final four innings after giving up four runs in the third, finishing with nine hits allowed and five strikeouts in five and one-thirds innings.
Brown pitched out of a potential seventh inning jam to close out the Wildcats, after yielding a lead off single and a one-out walk, retiring the final two hitters on fly ball.
Freshman Seriah Brokenborough led FAMU with two hits, a homer and five RBIs while Alexis Day finished with two hits, a double and three RBIs. Taylor Rosier and Tyra Bowers also had two hits, while Kimaya Watkins drove in a run for FAMU.
