ORMOND BEACH, Fla. (May 9) – The FAMU Women’s Softball team used a five-run sixth inning to rally past Norfolk State, 9-5 in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Softball Championships here at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex Thursday afternoon.

Thursday’s win propels the Rattlers Women (24-25) into Friday’s winner’s bracket semifinal showdown with archrival Bethune-Cookman, set for 3:00 p.m.

FAMU took a 1-0 lead in the first inning in the top of the fourth, but Norfolk State (25-19) tied the game with a tally in the bottom of the frame.

In the bottom of the fifth, a FAMU throwing error led to the Spartans scoring two runs for their only lead of the game at 3-1.

But in the top of the sixth, FAMU mounted a two-out comeback, scoring five runs on three hits, aided by two Norfolk errors to barge ahead, 6-3.

After the Spartans scored a run in the bottom of the sixth to trim the FAMU edge to 6-4, the Rattlers pushed across three runs on five hits in the top of the seventh to increase their advantage to 9-4, with NSU pushing across a final tally in the bottom of the seventh.

Hera Varmah drove in three runs to lead FAMU, along with Tyra Bowers, who drove in a pair of runs. Kyaira Brown led the Rattlers with three hits, followed by Alexis Day with two hits. Bowers, Varmah, Taylor Rosier, Seriah Brokenborough and Kimaya Watkins each finished with one hit.
