HOMERVILLE, Ga. (WTXL) - When Clinch County takes the field next football season, for the first time in 15 years, Jim Dickerson will not be the head coach.
The Clinch County alum announced his retirement from coaching and teaching last week at a Board of Education meeting, saying the decision was difficult, but the time was right.
"The stars lined up. I was at the right place at the right time, and just really had everything I needed and it was a great environment for small town football," he said of his success in Homerville. "The thing I'll miss the most is the relationships with the coaches and players. Obviously the Friday night lights. More and deeper than that, the relationships."
Over that decade and a half at the helm of the Panther program, Dickerson won five state titles, including three of the last four in A-Public. His record as a head coach? 152 and 44 with seven Region titles.
Whoever takes over certainly has big shoes to fill, but he said the Panthers will be just fine with whoever takes over.
"I certainly feel like that it will be done internally in house," he said of his potential replacement. "We've had recent success and with that I will certainly support an in house coach and I hope that's the direction our board goes."
Dickerson will coach track to finish out the school year.
