Major league baseball players and dozens of other former Chipola College players are expected to return to their alma mater for the annual Chipola Baseball Alumni Weekend Feb. 5-6.
The weekend will include live college baseball action, a Homerun Derby, great food and the chance to rub elbows with the pros, including two-time MLB Homerun champ Jose Bautista and his Toronto Blue Jays teammate, All-Star catcher Russell Martin. Braves catcher Tyler Flowers, Mariners catcher Steve Clevenger, and Diamondbacks pitcher Patrick Corbin are also expected to attend.
The Chipola All-Star Dinner & Celebrity Auction is set for Friday, Feb. 5, at 6:30 p.m. Chipola Coach Jeff Johnson will welcome back former coaches, players and guests for this exclusive event. Big-leaguers have donated thousands in memorabilia for the auction. Tickets are $100, with table sponsorships available for $1,000. Sponsors earn recognition at the dinner, 8 tickets, an autographed baseball and group photo with MLB players.
A full day of activities is set for Saturday, Feb. 6, at Chipola Field, including an Alumni/MLB Homerun Derby, MLB Autograph Session and live college baseball action.
The day begins at 10 a.m., with the Chipola Indians taking on Walters State in a pre-conference game. Bautista, Martin and honorary Chipola Alumnus Jeff Mathis will lead their fellow alumni in a Homerun Derby at 12:30 p.m. with guest prizes and MLB memorabilia for sale.
An MLB autograph and photo session runs from 2:30 to 3:30. For $10, fans can get one item signed by each professional. Player photos and MLB baseballs will also be available for purchase.
Passes to the day’s events are $10 per person for all ages. Fans are also invited to purchase fresh Grouper Lunch plates for $10.
Coach Johnson says, “We appreciate all the fans and former players who come out to support our program. These guys are so generous with their time and resources. It means a lot to our program.”
