Cairo Syrupmakers Prep For Tough Jefferson Squad In AAAA Playoffs

CAIRO, Ga. (WTXL) - If you're practicing Thanksgiving week, you're right where you want to be, still alive in the hunt for a State Championship. That's where the Cairo Syrupmakers are, but they want a whole lot more.

The 'Makers are 11-1 on the year, with their lone loss coming in early September to Thomas County Central. Head coach Steve DeVoursney notes they have grown from that loss, and it's only made them better.

Good thing too, because in the third round of the AAAA play-offs, everyone is good. Next up? Jefferson, a team with a great defensive line, and DeVoursney notes they're probably the biggest team Cairo has faced all year.

"We have to play whistle to whistle, and we have to hold on to the ball," he said of keys to winning Friday's game. "We only had one turnover last week, but we have to come out of this one with no turnovers and win the field. Blocking, tackling, just the little things that win football games. Just going back to basics and I think that's going to be the difference in the game, just basics. Field position, holding on to the football, and tackling."

Cairo hosts Jefferson Friday night in third round play. Kickoff is at 7:30.
