VALDOSTA, Ga. - With the opening of its 2014 preseason camp just days away, the Valdosta State football team learned Wednesday that it had been picked to finish third in the Gulf South Conference in a vote of the league coaches, as released by the GSC Office on Wednesday.
Valdosta State, which returns 45 letterwinners and 11 starters off its 2013 team, garnered 26 total points in the preseason poll on the basis of two second place and four third place votes. North Alabama topped the poll with 35 points as it pulled in five of the seven first place votes as well as one second place while Delta State tallied 30 points after receiving two first place votes, three second and one fourth.
West Alabama, which had 21 points, finished fourth in the poll followed by West Georgia in fifth with 17 and Florida Tech sixth at 12. Shorter, which is in its first season as a NCAA Division II member, rounded out the poll in seventh with six points.
