CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A seventh inning error proved costly for No. 11 Florida State (17-6, 5-2) as the Seminoles dropped game one of the series to No. 7 Virginia (14-5, 3-4) 8-4 on a cold and dreary Friday evening inside UVA Baseball Stadium on Davenport Field.
The Cavaliers took advantage of FSU’s only error of the game scoring five unearned runs in the seventh as Virginia defeated Florida State for the fourth straight time on its home turf. Kenny Towns, Matt Thaiss and Ernie Clement recorded three consecutive RBI hits in the inning to give UVa the lead for good on Friday night.
“Unfortunately, that error came back to get us in the seventh,” Florida State head coach Mike Martin said. “But there is still a lot of baseball left to be played and we will learn from this game. It was certainly a credit to our young club to jump out to the early lead and at the same time very disappointing to lose it like we did.”
Dylan Silva (2-1) suffered the loss as he was charged with four of the five unearned runs in the seventh.
Neither starting pitcher would factor into the decision on Friday night. FSU starter Boomer Biegalski would work into the seventh for the fifth straight outing leaving with one out in the sixth. The sophomore right hander allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits as he walked four and struck out nine.
“Boomer’s outing was excellent,” added Martin. “To hold them down like he did was a clear example of what he can be for us throughout the season. He’s just one of those guys that is willing to learn everything he can about the game. He faced a lot of good hitters tonight and he did a great job.”
The two teams will return to the field for game two of the series on Saturday, March 21 at 1 pm.
