VALDOSTA, Ga. – Jake Fields was two-for-three with two runs scored and three driven in to lead Valdosta State to a 9-0 victory over Paine in non-conference baseball action at Billy Grant Field Sunday afternoon.
With the win, VSU improved to 5-2 overall while Paine fell to 2-5.
Valdosta State used three hits in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. With one out in the frame, Nick Rodda singled and stole second before Ryan McClellan doubled to drive him home. A wild pitch moved McClellan to third and he scored on a ground ball by Clint Carr. Carr reached safely on a throwing error on the play and stole second before Jake Montgomery singled to drive him home for a 3-0 VSU lead.
Jake Fields singled and eventually scored on a Jamie McMillan ground out in the third to push the VSU advantage to four runs before adding two more runs in the sixth on a bases loaded single by Daniel Hoover and a sacrifice fly by Fields.
The Blazers added three more runs in the eighth inning, including two on a triple by Fields.
VSU starter Jeremy Holcomb allowed just three hits and walked one while striking out four in six innings to improve to 2-0 on the year.
Montgomery and Hoover also had two hits each for the Blazers.
In the three game sweep, Valdosta State's pitchers gave up just eight hits and three walks as VSU out-scored the Lions 27-0 in the series.
Valdosta State returns to action Wednesday, February 13 when it hosts Georgia Southwestern at Billy Grant Field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
