SARASOTA, Fla Health officials have closed the northern portion of Lido Key Beach after routine tests found high bacteria levels in the water.
Sarasota County Lifeguard Mark Miller says he's been getting questions all day from frustrated beach-goers.
"At first everybody is a little concerned, wondering where that source of bacteria would be coming from, but half the beach is open, it's just the north half of Lido that's closed. Once they realize they can go to the other end of the beach, they're fine," Miller said.
But not everyone is fine.
"That doesn't make me feel good. The water moves," said Nancy Villandly of Jupiter, Florida. She came to Sarasota on her husband's business trip so she could swim in the Gulf. She's disappointed--and her husband is surprised to see a portion of the Gulf closed.
"We've never had a case in Jupiter where you go to the beach and can't use the water. It's crazy," Villandly said.
Health officials hope to re-open the water on Friday. Stay close to MySuncoast.com for updates.
