A couple from California had their faith in humanity restored after a Goodwill worker found and returned $8,000 left in the pocket of a shirt they donated earlier in the week, ABC7 reported on Thursday.

For years Bob Hoffman was squirreling away money to surprise his wife with a trip to Italy when he retired in 2018. To keep her from finding it he'd been slipping money into the pocket of an orange dress shirt.

Recently his wife, Linda, decided to clean out the closet and unknowingly included the shirt in a pile of clothes she was donating to Goodwill. Bob didn't even realize what happened until he went to slip a $100 bill in the shirt pocket.

The two raced to the Goodwill store when they realized what happened, but there was no trace of the shirt. It wasn't until the next morning when the Hoffmans received a phone call and were informed a worker had discovered the shirt in a warehouse.

The couple recovered the money and paid for a pizza party for all the workers at the Goodwill as a thank you.
