SARASOTA CO., Fla. (WWSB) -- An ordinance banning the sale of puppies and kittens from puppy mills is set to go into effect in Sarasota County on Jan. 27.

Petland is the only commercial location in the county who sells dogs and cats from breeders.

On Saturday, protesters were outside of the Petland off Fruitville Road showing their disapproval over the sale of cats and dogs from commercial breeders.

"We want to make the public aware again of what these kind of places do," said a protester Saturday afternoon.

Petland is suing the county over the ordinance, claiming it's unconstitutional. They say they visit the sites with each of their breeders to ensure none of their animals are raised in less-than humane conditions.
