TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — With the economic uncertainties from the coronavirus, we here at ABC 27 are shining a light on businesses that are doing their part to help out the community while keeping their business open.

Ringing in its 40-year anniversary amid a pandemic, Native Nurseries has provided the Big Bend area with landscaping, gardening, and educational awareness of native wildlife.

Originally founded by wildlife ecologists, Donna and Jody Walthall, the nature center is now lead by their son Joe Walthall and his two partners, Seth Dunaway and Elizabeth Georges.

Since the pandemic, Native Nurseries has made new changes to keep business active while also keeping employees and customers safe.

From installing plexiglass barriers to providing store inventory online, customers can order by phone or email with the option of delivery or pick up.

"For curbside pickup, we give you a call to let you know when it's all set and get your payment," said Joe Walthall. "Then you just swing on by to pick it up. If it's something you need us to load, we'll load it for you. We have our red tent outside that we place all of the items under."

Priding themselves on native plants and the ecosystem, Native Nurseries says although sales weren't negatively affected due to the pandemic, their educational classes, and workshops were.

"We would definitely like to do more educational options, but classes are not really going to be happening here inside like we usually do," Joe Walthall said. "But so, one class is scheduled for this week and it's going to be outdoor only, a butterfly kind of class."

The free workshop will cover caterpillar and butterfly gardening. Interested guests must call Native Nurseries to register.

Located off Centerville Road, Native Nurseries is open Monday through Saturday. For more information click here.
