TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) — With the economic uncertainties from the coronavirus, we here at ABC 27 are shining a light on businesses that are doing their part to help out the community while keeping their business open.

Munchies Pizza is taking advantage of the pandemic and using it to rise higher than its famous deep-dish pizza dough.

Munchies Pizza has only been around for a little over a year after Owner Eric Riser opened it in June of last year.

Originally located on Florida State University's campus, due to the pandemic and the decline of business after students left they added new menu items and opened a second location off Apalachee Parkway.

"We're going to continue with our safety measures, and it shouldn't really affect our sales or anything," said Riser. "And we're still keeping the mask requirements for both locations."

Riser says despite being in Phase Three, he still plans to implement coronavirus safety measures in both locations while operating at 50 percent capacity.

"This is supposed to be the dining area, but instead we have tape for social distancing to pick up orders," said Joanne Jacobson, the manager at Munchies.

"Yeah, we completely separated the dining area from the pickup area that way if people are walking to pick up their pizza they're not walking to close proximity to people who are eating," Riser said.

Munchies Pizza offers special discount promotions through their VIP program via Facebook. They're also making a difference to keep children fed throughout the school year serving as a new community partner to Governors Charter Academy.

Munchies Pizza will be providing pizza at the Academy every Friday for the entire school year.

"They sell pizza by the slice for lunch every Friday and they decided to use us this year," said Riser. "So, we're going to be one of their sponsors in providing pizza for their lunch on Fridays. And we'll be there for their Fall Festival, which I'm really excited about. Since we opened our business, I haven't really had those opportunities and I'm excited to start doing that again because it's a lot of fun."

Since the pandemic, Munchies Pizza has also donated to FSU and events centered on their campus.

Riser says he's open to donating food to events and fundraisers.
