Your Career: Salary Negotiation

Tallahassee, Fla. (WTXL)-- Salary negotiation is an art.  Dependent on career discipline and industry, it can differ greatly in strategy and scope.  However, doing one’s homework and devising and implementing the right negotiation plan could result in thousands of dollars in increased income.

WTXL ABC 27's Jade Bulecza spoke with local expert, Patrick Medlock, to learn all about getting that salary boost.

Some of the tips regarding a starting salary negotiation:

  • Get your money coming in the door - company salary freezes and other unforeseen circumstances may prevent your ability to earn a raise. It's beneficial to negotiate early on to lock in that desired income.
  • Have a target and a bottom line in mind for each position - this will involve doing your homework for each position and company.
  • Don't bring up the salary  - The first person to mention money in the interview or recruitment process is the "loser." It is in the candidate's best interest to be as non-specific about salary as possible until a hiring manager has deemed you most viable.
