COLORADO SPRINGS, CO (KDVR/KRDO/CNN) – A 19-year-old man allegedly stabbed his two younger siblings to death and injured his father as part of a plan to kill his family so he could be alone at the home.
Early Tuesday morning, police found 5-year-old Sofia Murphy, 7-year-old Noah Murphy and their father Jefferson Murphy at their home with apparent stab wounds.
The two children had each suffered stab wounds to their necks and were pronounced dead at the hospital. Their father is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.
Police arrested and charged the children’s brother, 19-year-old Malik Vincent Murphy, with two counts of first-degree murder.
Jefferson Murphy told police he woke up to one of his children screaming, and when he went to check on them, he was confronted by the 19-year-old, who stabbed him.
The two fought until the suspect’s father was able to detain him in the garage, according to a police document.
Malik Murphy told police he often had “homicidal ideations” and planned to kill his family and bury them in the backyard so he could be alone at the home. He said he purchased the knife at a Walmart several months ago, according to the affidavit.
The 19-year-old and his younger siblings all slept in the same room. He told police he stabbed them both three times.
