63-year-old inmate dies at Florida jail

PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) — Sheriff's officials are investigating after a 63-year-old male inmate at the Escambia County Jail has died.

The inmate was found unresponsive Friday night and was pronounced dead at the hospital a few hours later. Authorities did not release his name.

The Pensacola News Journal (http://tinyurl.com/j4hztjb) reports this is the seventh inmate death since November 2014.

Authorities said the inmate was booked Dec. 9 and received a full medical evaluation. He had been housed alone in the infirmary for psychiatric care for most of that time and was checked on hourly.

Escambia County commissioners voted recently to create new medical director and independent monitoring positions to review the health care system at the jail. Several changes have been made, including inmate transportation, medical staff communications and updated shift reports.
