PHOENIX (AP) — Authorities say a 14-year-old boy speeding away from Phoenix police in a SUV hit a wall and died.
Officer James Holmes said police responded to a call about a fight at 2 a.m. Wednesday. They didn't find anything but saw a SUV driving with its lights off in the neighborhood.
Holmes says officers tried to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled. They backed off from a chase, turning off their flashing lights, but then discovered the crash.
Police say the 14-year-old driver was killed. Another teen tried to run away but was caught, and investigators learned that two others also were in the vehicle.
Holmes says the SUV belongs to the parents of one of the teens. No identities have been released.
