TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - There is a lot of season left to be played for high school football teams in the state of Florida. The focus right now for East Gadsden and Rickards High Schools? It's on each other.
For East Gadsden head coach Corey Fuller, this game is all about coming home. Fuller is a 1990 graduate of Rickards High, but he wants to make it known this game is all about winning for East Gadsden.
On the opposite sideline is Quintin Lewis, who like Fuller, graduated from Rickards. Lewis is a 1997 graduate, and admits it'd be nice to notch a win over Fuller.
"When I first got here, I think that he was the better team," remembered Lewis. "This year, it's kind of evenly matched. We really get a chance to see what both of us have as coaches. I'm not playing against Corey Fuller. We're playing against the East Gadsden Jaguars. Corey Fuller isn't going to play a down."
"I know Coach Lewis isn't scared, he's just making it sound good," said Fuller. "They cannot butter us up. They are big, that's the truth. We are big, and I think Coach Lewis has enough football knowledge that he understands the game that size does matter."
Rickards is more explosive, steered by a high powered, high scoring offense, while East Gadsden is bigger than the Raiders.
"They put up a lot of points. We'll have to stop them from being explosive," said Fuller. "We'll have to create some turnovers, and we're just going to have to hit them and hit them hard. Our assignments will have to be perfect this game to beat Rickards."
Friday's match-up kicks off at 7:00 at Rickards High School.
