MAYO, Fl. (WTXL) - The Lafayette Hornets are coming off a stellar 2017 campaign. They finished 9-2, and made the postseason. Mayo returns a lot of people off that team.
Back off that team? Quarterback Jaxon Beach, who threw for over over 2,000 yards and 28 touchdowns, as well as the Hornets leading rushers and receivers.
Mayo faces Dixie County Friday night for preseason play, the team that ended their near perfect season a year ago.
This team is ready to hit the field again, head coach Joey Pearson said it's been a long off season and they are excited to get things going.
"We did graduate 17 seniors, so we have some holes to fill, but we have a lot of really good players back," he said. "We feel like we'll be exciting on offense, explosive. We have five new starting offensive lineman, but we feel like offense we'll be explosive, defense there's a lot of unknowns. Having those key guys back is big for us. I think we've got some key spots that have some experience. We just have a lot of guys who have to figure it out as we go, and just see how it works out. Just hopefully stay healthy!"
Mayo hits the road to Cross City for that Kickoff Classic against the Bears on Friday Night.
