TALLAHASSEE, FL (#WTXLDigital) - Lois Carrington has been volunteering in Tallahassee's community centers since 2010. She's worked with children who didn't even know what a tennis racket was and has taught them how to become more confident on and off the court.
That's one of the many traits that coordinators like Glen Howe look for in potential volunteers.
Howe is the tennis coordinator for the Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Affairs for the City of Tallahassee. He's worked with volunteers like Carrington and says that volunteers truly have to have a servant's heart.
He says that it's a necessary trait to be a volunteer for the city's community centers, but what do you have to do into order to become one?
Like most positions, everything starts with an application. You have to fill out an application through the parks and recreation department, and after the necessary background checks, you are interviewed, so coordinators can figure out where you will fit in best.
For Lois Carrington, that was tennis. For others, it may be working with children in football, soccer, or baseball. It could also be working with families in underprivileged areas.
Howe says that when he looks into volunteers, he looks for ones like Carrington: people who are selfless, passionate about making a difference, and of course - those who have a servant's heart.
