TALLAHASSEE, FL (#WTXLDigital) - Living in a town filled with college students, have you ever wondered what it's like for a new student to make the move to Tallahassee?
What kind of fears do these students have? Starting college away from home sounds like it could cause an extreme case of the first day jitters. Most students are worried about making it to class on time or getting along with their roommate.
When I asked freshman Jaleesa DeKilder if she had any fears about the upcoming year, her response was unexpected: "not really. I'm usually just in the moment."
Over the course of this academic year, the #WTXLDigital series, "Do Your Own Laundry: Diary of a Freshman," will allow you to step into the shoes of DeKilder and experience her first year of college. DeKilder is an exercise science major from Tampa and is living on-campus with fellow freshman, Dounia Elsidawi.
In the first part of this series, DeKilder moved into her dorm. She says she is enjoying the on-campus living experience, saying that "everyone's been really nice so far."
DeKilder's roommate feels confident that they are off to a great friendship and really didn't have any anxieties about having a random roommate. Elsidawi says, "I get along with most everyone."
DeKilder talked about how she hopes to be involved in campus. She is a dancer and wants to continue that passion by joining an FSU dance troupe. She also has her eyes set on student government.
DeKilder says that she volunteered with medical organizations in high school and hopes to continue that type of involvement at Florida State. She says, "I'm really looking forward to starting my career, and I'm really excited about my major."
The fall semester kicked off on August 25th. DeKilder says that she had a great first week and is looking forward to her Family Relationships class.
#WTXLDigital will keep you updated on DeKilder's dorm life, classes, and those freshman myths like the Freshman 15. We'll also see if she has danced her way into a performance troupe on campus.
