MOULTRIE Ga. (WTXL) -This history of Moultrie dates back over a century. 137 years later, the town is still leaving its mark on South Georgia.
From its classic southern architecture to its century old magnolias, visiting Moultrie is like taking a step back in time. The third largest city in Southwest Georgia, behind Thomasville and Albany, Moultrie sits in the middle of Colquitt County.
As an agricultural and antique driven community. It was named after Walter T. Colquitt, a triple threat, working as a minister, statesman, and a lawyer. On December 13, 1879, 50 acres in the center of town became designated as Moultrie.
By the 1900's, the county became a hub for farmers across the southeast looking to get into the turpentine industry.
