WTXL Road Trip: Decatur County History

TALLAHASSEE Fla.-- By walking through the county's downtown museum, a visitor can take a step back in time.

Everything showcased in the Decatur County Historical and Genealogical Museum comes from items donated. The museum's inventory is fully donation based and items that display elements that have shaped the area's history.

In 1823, Decatur County was formed by the Georgia legislature.

From that point on, the waterways surrounding Decatur County became instrumental in the development of the region.

Donations they receive are essential to providing a living history museum for residents.

"If you throw it away, and it lands in a landfill. Then nobody is going to enjoy it or know the history of how it was. This is something we're building for the future." said Roslyn Palmer, President of Decatur County Historical Society.

The Decatur County Museum was established in 1995, through the efforts of Jim Lillethun. It is located across from the county courthouse on Water Street in downtown Bainbridge. The museum is open on Saturdays from 10am - 2pm. For more information on private tours, you can contact the Decatur County Genealogy Society at 229-515-1557.
