MIDWAY, Fla. (WTXL) - People in Eastpoint are still reeling after flames tore through their neighborhood last month.
The fire destroyed 36 homes and burned more than 800 acres. State officials say the fire got out of control after a prescribed burn. The prescribed fire program is now suspended statewide as investigators look into exactly what went wrong.
A Red Cross spokesperson says the fire destroyed at least 30 homes.
According to a Go Fund Me page, an estimated 200 people are now displaced as a result of this tragedy, and many without insurance.
While the donations have been pouring in, there’s still more to do. Franklin County Emergency Management Center is asking for monetary donations and mattresses.
We here at WTXL want to aid their fundraising efforts.
This Thursday, July 19 we are hosting a WTXL Question center to encourage people to continue to make monetary donations as well as donate much needed mattresses.
Wildfire victims and people from several organizations, to include Franklin's Promise Coalition, the Franklin County Emergency Response Team, and Duke Energy, will be here at WTXL answering your phone calls and taking donations.
The question center is set for July 19 at 5, 5:30, and 6.
