SUWANNEE COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A man has been airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries after troopers say he fell off a construction work truck in Suwannee County.

The Florida Highway Patrol says that the incident happened on Tuesday around 10 a.m.

Troopers say a SICE construction work truck was stopped on the shoulder of S.R. 8 at the eastbound mile marker 286 to pick up a foldable construction sign.

One of the passengers, identified as 34-year-old Zachariah Stinson of Pace, Fla., removed the sign and placed it in the bed of the vehicle. He then sat on the back of the vehicle to move to the next area.

As the vehicle accelerated in an attempt to merge into the outside right travel lane, Stinson fell off the vehicle, hitting his head on the road. He was airlifted to UF Health Shands for serious injuries.

No one else was injured in the incident.

FHP says charges are pending further investigation.
