LAFAYETTE, Ga. (AP) - Authorities say a woman has been charged in the death of her grandchild in north Georgia.
Georgia Bureau of Investigation Special Agent in Charge Greg Ramsey told multiple news media that 47-year-old Barbara Pemberton was arrested Friday. Ramsey says Pemberton left her 13-month-old grandchild Shadoe Braxton Pate asleep in her car with heat running on low while she visited friends for more than five hours.
When Pemberton returned to the car, Pate was unresponsive. Pate was pronounced dead Tuesday at the Hutcheson Medical Center.
Ramsey says the temperature inside the automobile was more than 100 degrees on Tuesday.
Pemberton is charged with second degree murder and cruelty to children. Pemberton is being held at the Walker County Jail on a $100,000 bond. It's not clear if she has an attorney.
