BROOKSVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Police say a Florida woman faces manslaughter charges after giving birth in her shower and placing the newborn in a trash bag that she hid in her room.
Brooksville Police Chief George Turner says 27-year-old Maria Macdalena Castillo told detectives she didn't know she was pregnant when she gave birth April 28. The baby girl's cause of death was listed as asphyxiation, hemorrhage and inattention at birth.
Castillo was arrested Wednesday and remains in the Hernando County Jail.
Turner says they waited to arrest Castillo until the medical examiner's report confirmed that the child was alive at birth.
The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/1mWnr9R ) reports that Castillo shared an apartment with her mother and adult siblings. No one knew she was pregnant and didn't learn of the birth until hours later.
