TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--Friday teachers, principals, and law enforcement members learned how to keep your kids safe at schools--by taking part in a special 8 hours crisis management course.
But one Florida lawmaker has a plan of his own which he introduced on Wednesday.
Republican representative Greg Steube of Sarasaota wants to allow school employees to carry concealed firearms.
The issue has become front and center after last year's deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Connecticut.
Ladona Kelley, a principal with Calhoun County school district says there's more than one approach to the issue.
"I think they need to have discussions with administrators and district personnel as far as what is actually happening on campuses and their concerns," said Kelley.
Educators like Mike Webber agrees, he says he's not sure if strapping school employees would be the best plan.
"What kind of liability issues are you looking at just a lot of issues would have to be resolved prior to arming your teachers," said Webber.
It's just one reason why educators here say they have to be prepared just in case an emergency occurs.
"You can't be ignorant of the fact that its not going to happen its just a matter of when something might happen or some type of disaster might happen and you've got to have your plans in place to deal with it," said Kelley.
