Why some people just can't wait to decorate

(RNN) - What is it with those people who, even before Thanksgiving, start stringing up lights, putting wreaths on their doors and lugging in trees, which they promptly cover with glittery ornaments?

Those who dare to ask are often labeled Scrooges and Grinches by their exuberant neighbors, who clearly identify more with Buddy the Elf.

Emotionally, jumping ahead on decking the halls can be a positive thing, some psychologists say. It’s all about retrieving fond childhood memories.

“In a world full of stress and anxiety, people like to associate to things that make them happy, and Christmas decorations evoke those strong feelings of childhood,” psychoanalyst Steve McKeown said in an interview with Unilad. “Decorations are simply an anchor or pathway to those childhood magical emotions of excitement. So putting up those Christmas decorations early extends the excitement.”

Psychotherapist Amy Morin echoed McKeown’s thoughts.

“The holiday season stirs up a sense of nostalgia,” said Morin, author of  13 Things Mentally Strong People Don’t Do. “Nostalgia helps link people with their personal past, and it helps people understand their identity. For many, putting up Christmas decorations early is a way for them to reconnect with their childhoods.”

So it’s OK to be one of “those people.” When it comes to holiday cheer, they're way ahead of the game.
