TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Tallahassee Animal Services says it has about 50 dogs at the shelter, and about 30 of them belong to what's called a "bully" breed, which include pitbulls, bulldogs and terriers.
Some people might think it's because of the stigma attached to the bully breed, but the shelter says the abundance of the breed is for two other reasons.
First, they're popular. The shelter says bully breeds are the most requested type of dogs in the community, so they cater to the demand.
Second, these dogs tend to breed a lot, so, simply, there's more of them in the first place.
Shelter director Erika Leckington says while the dogs do have a place to stay, finding a home for them helps meet some basic needs.
"With the bully breeds, we find that they're extremely intelligent, and they want to be around people a lot," she said. "So, when we start housing them in, unfortunately, in a shelter environment where they're behind a chain-link fence, they've just got a cot to lay on. Yes, they have their food and water. they just need a lot more mental stimulation than we're able to provide here."
The shelter says there are a lot of misconceptions about the temperament of bully breeds, but they should be treated like any other dog.
Animal Services is holding adoption events this weekend and waiving fees for all animals -- including bully breeds.
