TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Many members of the Tallahassee community came out on Saturday for the 'March For Our Lives' rally outside the Florida Capitol.
WTXL ABC 27 spoke to the FSU student who organized the local gun violence protest.
Matthew Harris, the freshman who helped make the local rally possible, says plans are underway for an FSU chapter of Students Demand Action.
He says, classrooms are places for learning, not places to worry about gunfire. That's exactly why the group wants to start a new campaign for students to get involved and demand gun control reform.
Harris says, this cause hits close to home for him. He graduated from Stoneman Douglas High School last year and his sister was in class at Stoneman during the shooting.
"After the shooting, I really felt a responsibility to do something and take a leadership role in the movement," said Harris. "So I decided to plan a Facebook event just kind of out of pure emotion and grief and everything else, that grew to about 2,800 people."
The rally even attracted people from nearby cities who wanted to join in on the protest. Harris says, it was encouraging to see the Tallahassee community stand in solidarity.
He says the group of students leading the local movement are hoping to create change with a new FSU chapter of Students Demand Action.
