TALLAHASSEE, FL (#WTXLDigital) - Same-sex couples from across Tallahassee and the surrounding areas waited at the Leon County Clerks Office for the clock to strike 8am - the moment that would bring them one step closer to making their marriage official.

Several of these couples thought that there would be a line out to the door, but they were surprised to find only a handful of couples waiting for a clerk to call their name.

The first couple to receive a license were Richelle Marisco and Manda Smith, who met playing softball and have been together for several years.

Devon and Kristy Miller live in south Georgia, but met in Florida. They had a commitment ceremony two years prior, where Devon told Kristy that she thought they would be able to marry legally within the next five years, but Kristy didn't believe her.

Kristy was in for a shock when the counties across Florida decided to start issuing marriages licenses on Tuesday morning.

The couple calls the experience "surreal," and they're not the only ones.

Marcy and Rebecca MacDonell have been together for 14 years and walked into the clerks office alongside their family and reverend.

As soon as they got that license, they went to the Capitol and made it official. They said that they were surrounded by a few family members and even used FaceTime to make sure that everyone was part of their special day.

It was around 9am when the couple came back into the clerks office, but this time, they were legally married - the first same-sex couple married in Tallahassee.

Reverend Elder M. Diane Fisher had tears of joy as she watched Marcy and Rebecca turn in their license to the office. She says that she's officiated unions before, but this first same-sex wedding has been a moment that she has been waiting for.

As of 4:30pm Tuesday, 47 marriage licenses have been issued by the Leon County clerks office.
