EMERYVILLE, CA (KPIX/CNN) - As immigration debates continue in Washington and throughout the country, a vandalized billboard is sending a strong message against family separations at the U.S. border.
"We make junk disappear" is what the sign is supposed to say. But it’s been altered to read, "We make kids disappear - ICE."
It's in reference to Immigration and Customs Enforcement and a policy at the border over the last several weeks that separates migrant children from their parents.
"I think it's a pretty powerful political statement," Heran Medhin said.
The statement comes from the activist art collective Indecline, the same group behind the naked President Trump statue that popped up in San Francisco and a vandalized shooting range billboard in Las Vegas that read, "School a school kid. Only $29."
The anonymous activist group painted over the sign to protest the Trump administration's “zero tolerance” policy on illegal immigration.
"It's a travesty what's going on right now. It's terrible. We need to do something about that." Brittany Abbott said.
Though this is vandalism, the folks waiting for the bus near the sign said they appreciate the message.
"It's a good message. It's a good message," Abbott said.
"I think, ultimately, we have to be concerned with children first before we're concerned about a lot of other external issues, regardless of what country they came from. Their children - they didn't do anything to deserve to be separated from their parents," Medhin said
Clear Channel workers say they plan to remove the vandalized sign.
President Trump signed an executive order on Wednesday ending family separations at the border, but a reunification process is still unclear for those children who've already been taken from their parents.
