VALDOSTA, Ga. (AP) - More than 30 million gallons of partially treated wastewater has spilled into a south Georgia river this week.
Valdosta city officials say 31.3 million gallons of wastewater has been spilling into the Withlacoochee River from a nearby wastewater treatment facility since Saturday.
The spills are attributed to recent heavy rain in the region and Environmental Manager John Waite tells the Valdosta Daily Times he expects the numbers to drop within Georgia Environmental Protection Division compliance guidelines within the next few days.
Waite says the plant has been overloaded in recent days and officials have invited engineers to evaluate whether any treatment processes are causing the spills.
Heavy rain forced officials to close the Withlacoochee Wastewater Treatment Plant earlier this month.
