WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Getting behind the wheel is a goal for many teenagers once they're old enough to drive.

On Saturday, teens in Wakulla County got a chance to work with special instructors.

About 25 teenagers were at Wakulla High School Saturday getting a lesson from the sheriff's office. As part of their annual Teen Driver Challenge.

"Some of the things they learn are some of the same basic things we learn in law enforcement," said Jared Miller with Wakulla Sheriff's Office.

The course allows kids to practice real-life situations, where they might need to swerve out of trouble or even stop on a dime.

Half of the teens in this program do not have their full license yet.

Some of them like Paul Kilgore use this class to get ready for the driving test.

"They are putting us on courses that are going to be like the ones the DMV  will put you on, so this is extra practice and experience," said Kilgore.

Outside of the course, the teens said it's the one-on-one teaching that improves their driving the most.

The teens also got a chance to hear from people who've taken the class before to see how it helped improve their own driving skills.
