WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - While students are enjoying summer vacation, the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office and members of the WCSO Safe Schools Division are preparing for their return to the classroom.

They are performing threat assessments at every school in the county before the fall semester.

This is part of a new requirement of the recently passed Safe School Legislation

WCSO's School Safety Division has been working alongside members of the Wakulla County FIre Department and the Wakulla County School Board on these threat assessments for the past two weeks.

They are testing just how much the schools can withstand and how effectively and quickly the students could get to safety in the face of a tragedy.

They are not only focusing on an active shooter situation but also on every threat that a student could face, like fires and traffic accidents.

The findings will be given to the schools to ramp up safety measures and lessen the chances of a threat succeeding.

Last month deputies wrapped up the first phase of training. That phase included training with force on force scenarios, focusing on handling armed shooter situations and making sure their department is up to speed with the weapons and tactics that many recent active shooters used.
