WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Volunteers are the backbone of the community and in Wakulla County, organizers say it's time to honor their effort and commitment.

They say so much of the behind the scenes work they do goes unrecognized.

That's why the Wakulla County Chamber of Commerce decided to show its appreciation by creating a volunteer of the year award 2 years ago. It's one of the newest awards within the Business Excellence Awards hosted each year.

"We're looking for someone who goes above and beyond, someone who does for an organization something that would otherwise not be done," said Joann Palmer, the chair of the Wakulla County Chamber of Commerce. "Volunteers are a valuable part of the thread of America."

The winner is selected from a group of nominees put forward by Wakulla County residents.

The winner will be announced at the 2017 Business Excellence Awards.
