WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The Wakulla County Sheriff's Office is making sure every school in the county is equipped with top of the line resource officers.
The school resource officers just wrapped up the first phase of training.
The deputies are trained through multiple "force on force" scenarios where all role players are armed with simulated weapons to mimic an active shooter situation.
The resource officers will continue their training, learning the new School Safety Bill and the responsibilities required.
"Protecting a campus is to prevent loss of life. That's the first and foremost," said Wakulla County Deputy Ronald Mitchell. "Whether that be loss of life from a traffic crash, whether that be from an active shooter or an active threat or a simple roof collapse from a tornado."
Deputies say, with the newer equipment and skill sets, they're best equipped to protect students.
