Wakulla County Considering Purchasing New 911 Dispatch System

Posted

WAKULLA CO., Fla. (WTXL)- Wakulla County commissioners are expected to discuss a request to purchase a new dispatch system for the 911 center Tuesday night.

Wakulla County sheriff Charlie Creel says the current technology is outdated.

According to Creel, the center currently has six 911 consoles, but only two are functioning and repairs cannot be made because replacement parts are not available.

If the system does not work, it means radio communications between dispatch and first responders are lost.

Sheriff Creel says because of the potential for failure with the current system, it's time to make the purchase.

"We not only dispatch to the Wakulla County Sheriff's Office, we dispatch for Wakulla County Fire and Rescue also. So if this system goes down totally. We've got a problem, because not only can we not talk to our deputies, but we can't talk to fire/rescue," said Sheriff Creel.

Creel says he has been working on getting the new system since he took office 4 years ago.

The new system has a price tag of $322,000.
