VALDOSTA, GA (WTXL) - VSU's Interim President Dr. Cecil Staton has announced he will be leaving for East Carolina University at the end of the school year.

According to a statement released by the university, Dr. Staton's last day as president will be June 30.

Staton was nominated for his new position by the president of the University of North Carolina Margaret Spellings and has since been approved by the Board of Governors at ECU.

Chancellor Hank Huckaby announced that he will name a new president and a presidential search committee soon.

In a letter to students and faculty, Staton stated his appreciation for his time at the university.

"In the coming weeks, I look forward to connecting with our faculty, staff, and students as we prepare for the close of the academic year," Staton said in the letter.

Staton was named Vice Chancellor for Extended Education by the University System of Georgia in 2014. He was named Interim President at VSU in 2015 after the previous president, William McKinney, stepped down.
