TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - According to numbers released by Leon County, violent crimes are on their way down in the capitol city.

The report said that overall violent offenses have gone down more than 13 percent overall for the first half of 2016. There also has been a 20 percent drop in aggravated assaults and a 50 percent drop in the amount of murders.

Sheriff Mike Wood says those numbers are a good start. "We're happy but we don't feel like we've crossed the finish line. There's a lot of work to be done. And the Chief and I are in complete agreement on that."

With the homicide rate being cut in half, down from eight to four cases. Tallahassee Police Chief Michael Deleo says its a statistic that has to be even lower.

"Last springtime, we had a large number of shootings resulting in deaths. And the fact that our community is becoming less violent, that the response as a whole, law enforcement in the community are coming together, has been very effective," said Chief Deleo

Both police and deputies have said they are continuing to work around the clock to keep the community safe.
