ASHEVILLE, NC (WLOS/CNN) – A pregnant woman in North Carolina has been charged with assault after running over a man she allegedly found breaking into her car.
Christine Braswell, 26, says she walked out of Walmart to find a man, later identified as Robert Raines, going through the belongings in her SUV.
The woman, who is five months pregnant, says she confronted Raines before he allegedly took off with her purse. She says she tried to chase after him but couldn’t catch up, so she got in her car.
"I came back out here, and he was with my purse and took off. I took off after him. Me being five months pregnant, I chased a little ways then came back, jumped in the car, threw it in gear and came across the curb and ran him over. I was not letting him get away with it. It's not right. It's not fair,” Braswell said.
Two witnesses helped Raines to the curb, where he sat writhing while paramedics tended to him. He was taken to the hospital but suffered only minor injuries.
"She slammed on her brakes, crammed it in reverse and ran over the median there in between and hit him in the back. I mean she just, he was running, and she just flat hit him,” witness Janice Kelley said.
Police are charging Raines with breaking and entering, larceny and damage to property.
Braswell is also facing a charge: misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon.
