TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - WTXL is mourning the loss of one of our own today.
Shirley Calkins-Ellis' influence was felt strongly here in the Big Bend, even by those who never met her.
She was co-owner and vice president of Calkins Media, the parent company of ABC 27.
She often said, "We run our companies for the betterment of the communities", and it was certainly true of this station.
Ellis was born into the news business.
Her dad founded the Calkins Media Company, and Shirley carried on the family mission.
Calkins Media also owns 2 other TV stations, in Sarasota and Huntsville, along with 4 newspapers in Pennsylvania, one in New Jersey, and one in Homestead, Fla.
Shirley's sons and grand children also remain active in the company.
