Viagra-like ingredient forces coffee recall

Viagra-like ingredient forces coffee recall
Posted

(RNN) - A coffee company has recalled all lots of a brand that contains a chemical similar to the active ingredient in Viagra.

BestHerbs Coffee is recalling all packages of New of Kopi Jantan Tradisional [sic] Natural Herbs Coffee after an FDA analysis revealed the presence of desmethyl carbodenafil, which is similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in the erectile-dysfunction drug.

It also contains undeclared milk.

The instant coffee is marketed as a male enhancement product and was distributed from July 2014 through 2016. It was distributed nationally “via internet or individuals,” according to the FDA report.

The undeclared drug could interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs, such as nitroglycerine, and may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels. Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or heart disease often take drugs containing nitrates.

People who are sensitive to milk could also suffer an allergic reaction that could be life-threatening.

There have been no reports of illness to date, the company said.

Consumers with questions regarding this recall can contact Bestherbs Natural Coffee at 817-903-2288 or Albertyee.abc@hotmail.com, Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT. Consumers should contact their physician or healthcare provider if they have experienced any problems that may be related to taking or using this product.
