TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A trip back in time Wednesday morning at the Florida capitol.
A Benjamin Franklin lookalike was on hand to deliver a reading of the Declaration of Independence.
For years, the Vietnam Veterans of America Tallahassee chapter has stood on the steps of the state capitol in honor of the July 4 holiday.
For some, Wednesday served as a chance to brush up on American history.
"I didn't remember the majority of the Declaration of Independence and sitting here listening to it really brings it home. This is why we did what we did," said Raymond Miller.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - On this Fourth of July, a group of veterans will gather on the steps of Florida's Historic Old Capitol to continue a tradition.
The Vietnam Veterans will be here at the Capitol to recite the Declaration of Independence. Vietnam Veterans of America, Big Bend Chapter is hosting their 5th Annual re-creation.
A lookalike Ben Franklin will read the Declaration of Independence on the buildinig's front steps.
Organizers say the event is a great family event that is both fun and educational.
"We started this five years ago," said organizer Joe West. "This'll be our fifth trip I think, and we just think it's an interesteing way to start Independence Day. It's a fun way and its an educational way. It's amazing how many people have never read the Declaration of Independence."
There will also be a tutorial on flag and National Anthem etiquette and singing of the National Anthem.
The reading starts at 9 a.m. and lasts less than 30 minutes.
Participants definitely have fun with the event. In fact, the veteran reading the Declaration of Independence dresses up as Ben Franklin.
That veteran told me that he will start to put his makeup on at 7 a.m. this Wednesday morning and it is the only reason he will shave his facial hair.
