VALDOSTA, GA (WALB) - There are only a few more weeks before the new fiscal year starts and Valdosta city leaders are currently in the middle of a public budget hearing.

They are trying to secure an official city budget for the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

Right now the current proposed budget is just over $97 million, which is a $114,000 increase from last year.

The city has been working for roughly six months to develop a budget that fits the needs of all its departments.

"Everyone works together to make sure that we are providing a budget that's fiscally responsible, while keeping those same services that we offer to the citizens, making sure we're staying on top of that as well," said Valdosta Spokesperson Ashlyn Becton.

The public hearing is still open for an indefinite amount of time for people to ask questions that may lead to adjustments or just to get more information.

There will be one more public hearing during the city council meeting on Thursday, June 21 at 5 p.m., which will be followed with the final vote on the budget.
