VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL)-- A Valdosta Police officer is out of a job, and accused of tampering with evidence.

Chief Brian Childress says a several weeks ago, officer Trey Gandy went to a call where a person found two shotguns and a watch on their property that did not belong to them.

After interviewing the person who owns the items as well as the person who found the items, police learned Gandy had taken one of those guns and did not turn it in as evidence.

Childress says Thursday night Gandy was issued a termination letter. He was also arrested and taken to the Lowndes County Jail.

He's charged with theft by taking, violation of oath, and tampering with evidence. Gandy has since bonded out of jail. Childress says he worked at the police department for about two years.

Chief Childress says although he regrets it happened, officer Gandy was treated like any other citizen, except he lost his job.

Chief Childress says this is an isolated incident and it's being reported to the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council.
