VALDOSTA, Ga. (WALB) - A businessman in downtown Valdosta is dealing with the loss of his 40-year-old business to a major fire.

David Brooks owns Valdosta Furniture and Mattress and said that he watched his building literally go down in flames.

Over the weekend, the firefighters responded to a major fire in the heart of the city, which Brooks said could have costed him his entire business.

He owns Valdosta Furniture and Mattress and says that the business has been in his family for more than 40 years.

Brooks says that it was especially strange not going back to work Monday morning like normal and that the fire turned his world upside down.

The furniture store just celebrated 40 years in service and that it is a lot to deal with, with the holidays approaching. But Brooks says that this is not the end for him.

He shares that his business will reopen but he's just trying to figure out in what capacity.

Brooks went on to say that he is keeping his head up and is thankful for the community support that he has received.

The Valdosta Fire Department is continuing to investigate the cause of that fire.
